NEW DAWN: COM FAKOLADE OLUWAFEMI EMERGE IKORODU NUT CHAIRMAN IN A KEENLY CONTESTED ELECTION

Thursday, May 25th, 2017 was historic for Ikorodu teachers as 774 delegates, across primary and secondary schools in Ikorodu came together to elect a new chairman to steer the affairs of the union for the next four years. This is coming after the expiration of the two term, eight year tenure of the Com Lateef Oduguwa-led executives.

The election is particularly historic for the National Union of Teachers, Ikorodu branch, owing to the intense politicking that preceded the exercise.

Fakolade got the mandate of his colleagues, to steer the ship of the union for the next four years after his landslide victory, beating his closest opponent by 383 votes, pulling 554 out of the 725 total votes cast in an election that has been adjudged free and fair by observers.

Comrade Fakolade Oluwafemi, the immediate past NUT Secretary defeated  Alhaji Zulkhadeen Omotunde Muyideen to emerge as the new chairman of the branch, while Comrade Aleshinloye Kehinde Sunday defeated Comrade Fajebe Babatunde Onasanya to claim the position of the branch secretary.

Comrade Fakolade Oluwafemi was declared winner of the election at about 7:15pm  local time by the electoral committee, which then threw his camp into ecstatic euphoria. The newly elected Chairman who made his acceptance speech at exactly 7:30pm shortly after his declaration, dedicated his victory to God in series of songs of praise. He also commended his supporters for their unflinching dedication, which he described as indispensable to his victory.

 

Com Fakolade also praised a former Chairman of NUT Ikorodu and his predecessor, Com Lateef Oduguwa for his influence and mentoring, which assisted him in winning the election.

In a brief remarks, the immediate past chairman of the Ikorodu NUT, Lateef Oduguwa advised Com Fakolade not to run a government of exclusion, regardless of who might have disappointed him in the build up to the election. Oduguwa further revealed that seventy five percent of those who opposed him during his time in office voted for the new Chairman because of the all-inclusive government he ran. He however appealed to the teachers to support the agenda of the newly-elected Chairman.
