Gbolahan Empowers Ikorodu Youth with Boxing Equipment, Sparks Hope for Grassroots Sports Development.
In a significant move aimed at boosting grassroots sports development, Honourable Gbolahan, a member representing Ikorodu Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly, on April 12, 2026, distributed boxing equipment to youths in the Ipakodo area of Ikorodu, Lagos.
The event, which took place at a L.G primary school Ipakodo, attracted sports enthusiasts, and young aspiring athletes who gathered to witness the initiative. The distribution included essential boxing gear such as headgear, venom pads, mouthguards, bandages, and body protectors, all intended to support training and nurture young talents in the community.
Speaking during an interview, with our correspondennt, Chairman of Ipakodo All-Stars Dr. Fatai Abiodun, commended the lawmaker for his continued support for youth development through sports. He noted that the gesture would go a long way in encouraging young people to pursue careers in athletics, particularly boxing.
“Honourable Gbolahan has once again demonstrated his commitment to grassroots development,” Abiodun said. “Previously, he provided football equipment, and now, he has focused on boxing. This will not only help our youths train effectively but also position them to compete at both national and international levels.”
Furthermore, the Dean, Students Affairs, Lagos State University emphasized that the initiative was part of a broader effort to identify and develop local talents, adding that the youths in Ipakodo now have a better opportunity to represent their community on global sporting platforms.
He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the lawmaker and the community, noting that such synergy is essential for delivering the dividends of democracy.
However, Abiodun also urged the legislator to expand his efforts beyond sports. He called for increased intervention in areas such as education, job creation, empowerment programmes, and technological development for young people.
According to Abatan, these sectors are crucial in addressing the growing challenges faced by youths, including unemployment and social instability.
“In addition, we expect more initiatives that will improve the overall well-being of our youths. While sports is a powerful tool, there is also a need for opportunities in education and employment,” he added.
The chairman further expressed concern over the current state of youth welfare in the country, stating that many young people face uncertain futures due to limited job opportunities.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged that Honourable Gbolahan’s gesture shows a clear understanding of these challenges and a willingness to address them.
Also, members of the community expressed gratitude for the donation, describing it as timely and impactful. They praised the lawmaker for not neglecting the youth and for consistently reaching out with meaningful support.
In a show of appreciation and political support, the Ipakodo sports community endorsed Honourable Gbolahan for a second term in office. They expressed confidence in his leadership and pledged their continued backing, citing his achievements and dedication to the constituency.
“We are happy and deeply appreciative of his efforts,” Abiodun concluded. “We pray for his strength to do more, and we fully support his return to the House of Assembly for another term.”
