RECESSION: BRT BUS OPERATORS TO HIKE FARE BY FEBRUARY

Operators of the Lagos Bus Rapid Transit scheme, Primero Transport services has announced plans to increase its fares on all routes from February, 2017.

The Company’s Managing Director, Mr Fola Tinubu, made the disclosure in an intervuew with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ikorodu on Thursday, 26th January, 2017.

According to Premium Times Online, Mr Tinubu revealed that the increase was as a result of rising operational cost. The transport company has maintained a fare of N75, N120 and N195 from Ikorodu to Mile 12, Fadeyi and CMS respectively, since it began operations in 2015.

The company’s Managing Director further disclosed that the company will introduce new fares by the end and February and early March 2017, due to the present economic situation in the country. While speaking, Mr Fola added that rising cost of diesel and spare parts of the buses which are imported from China, as well as foreign dollar component in the company’s debt portfolio, are some of the factor which have prompted the company to increase fare prices.

It is however not certain what the company’s new transport fares would be. The operators of the yellow-painted commercial buses, popularly called Danfo, currently charge N150, N200, and N350 from Ikorodu to Mile 12, Fadeyi and CMS respectively.

In a telephone conversation with Ikorodu Oga Radio, Mosunmola Agbaje, PRO, Primero Services Ltd, operators of the BRT Bus Scheme disclosed that the new fare will take effect between february or march once the company gets formal approval from His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

On other issues, such as turn around time that continues to linger on at the Ikorodu and other bus terminals, the Managing Director said the company has introduced early Riser System to check the menace.
