LAGOS TARGETS NEW WEALTH FROM CIRCULAR ECONOMY

•‘Idea aimed at minimising waste, creating sustainable production patterns’ — Sanwo-Olu

In furtherance with Mr Governor of Lagos mandate of creating a sustainable path for Lagosians.. It took a shape forward today as delivered today in his words;

Dear Lagosians,

Today, we are making a historic shift towards a circular economy, aimed at saving resources for future generations and fostering sustainable consumption.

We started our circular economy journey three years ago, engaging stakeholders and setting up a technical working group. We now have a web-based dashboard to measure implementation progress and today I unveiled the Circular Economy Hotspot at a conference organised by the State Government in collaboration with Circular Economy Innovation Partnership (CEIP) and African Circular Economy Network.

The Circular Economy Hotspot 2023 is not just vital for Lagos but for all of sub-Saharan Africa. Our administration believes in citizen engagement and partnership to foster resilient socio-economic development.

The launch event was also attended by the Consular General of the Kingdom of Netherlands, Mr. Michael Deelen. Mr Deelen congratulated us for being the first sub-national to embark on a circular economic project, noting that it was time for Nigeria to have a change of perspective and expectations.

As we pioneer this transformative model, we look to global leaders like the Netherlands, who have successfully implemented circular economy practices.

By following their footsteps, we can unlock new economic opportunities and reduce waste, benefiting both our environment and the livelihoods of Lagosians.

Circular economy entails producing, repairing, and recycling materials, promoting regeneration and environmental friendliness. This initiative will create new wealth for SMEs, generate jobs, and require innovative ideas and manpower for long-term material use.

Inclusive and sustainable economic growth is our goal.
