HON SOB AGUNBIADE’S IREP MAKES HISTORY AS ASA CULTURAL CARNIVAL BERTHS IN IKORODU DIVISION

An Ikorodu division based non-governmental organization, Ikorodu Division Rebirth Foundation, otherwise known as IREP has made history for the entire Ikorodu division, by hosting the first-ever Asa cultural Carnival, with many Asa group across communities in the division participating.

The group, which was formed 1n 2015 by Hon SOB Agunbiade, Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly ‘to connect the past to the present for the future. Hence, it’s stride to revive and propagate festivals and monuments of cultural values and tourism potentials in Ikorodu Division’.

Explaining the rationale behind the hosting of the Asa carnival, the group stated that, ‘we decided on Asa Project, to revive and propagate the dying culture of Asa in Ikorodu Division. To get the Government of Lagos State to recognise and approve Asa as a cultural festival to be celebrated in Ikorodu Division.

It also added that the carnival was hosted to document for the world and the generations yet unborn, the cultural values. socio – economic and tourism potentials of Asa culture.

Sequel to the hosting of the Asa carnival on saturday November 4th, 2017, the group had erected a statue of Asa at the Ogolonto point of entry to Ikorodu. The Asa statue was formally unveiled by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, ably represented by Hon Adebimpe Akinsola, acting commissioner for Arts and Culture. It has also produced 40 pieces of miniature statue of Asa to serve as official gift items by our Monarchs to important dignitaries.

To document the cultural relevance of the Asa carnival, the group also produced a 120-page book on culture and practice of Asa which was formally launched at the event.

About six Asa groups, from Imota, Igbogbo, Isele, Ijomu, Aga and Agura communities of the division participated at the carnival, with each group displaying their unique skill and dexterity to the amazement of distinguished guests.

On hand to entertain guests was Oganla of Fuji, Alh Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, Alh Fatai Akanbi Valentine and Ikorodu-born contemporary Apala hiphop crroner, Qudus Fakoya, Qdot among other upcoming artistes.
