Eko Club International, New York Chapter on Wednesday awarded scholarships to 30 students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), reaffirming their commitment to supporting Lagos State indigenes in achieving their educational dreams.
The event, held at the university’s 500-seater hall, gathered LASUSTECH’s Vice Chancellor, the Dean of Student Affairs, department heads, lecturers, friends and family of the awardees, students, and Eko Club Int’l officials, creating a lively atmosphere of celebration and inspiration.
According to Dr Tayo Ogunyemi who led the team, ‘This is not the first time Eko Club New York Chapter has reached out to support the institution’s students. The scholarship program began two years ago when LASUSTECH was still a polytechnic, with an initial aim to support 20 students. However, despite the club’s efforts, fewer students applied than expected in the program’s first year, possibly due to disbelief in the scholarship’s legitimacy. In the end, 22 students received scholarships, paving the way for the program’s current success’.
Under the leadership of President Kayode Dosunmo, Eko Club Int’l New York increased the scholarship award from 50,000 Naira to 100,000 Naira per student.
Ogunyemi further highlighted the importance of the scholarship award and expressed gratitude for the support of LASUSTECH’s faculty and staff.
‘If we can support 30 students, and other organizations do the same, we can reach countless students together’, he remarked, calling on other groups to join in uplifting Nigerian students’, he stated.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Olumuyiwa Odusanya also commended Eko Club Int’l New York for their dedication to educational upliftment of Lagos State indigenes.
‘Your contributions remind us of the transformative power of community-driven support.” He encouraged the scholarship recipients to maintain their academic commitment and urged other students to strive for similar opportunities.
One of the awardees, representing her fellow recipients, expressed sincere appreciation to Eko Club Int’l New York, saying, ‘We won’t let you down. We will make you proud’, promising to uphold the club’s generosity through continued academic success.
With plans to expand the opportunity to 50 students next year, Eko Club Int’l New York’s scholarship initiative sets a strong example of how community support can transform educational opportunities and inspire excellence across Lagos State.
