WASTE TO WEALTH: IOGC, SAHARA GROUP PARTNERS IKORODU LOCAL GOVERNMENT FOR WASTE RECYCLING, CLEANER ENVIRONMENT

IOGC and Sahara Group have partnered with Ikorodu Local Government in a strategic initiative that offers Ikorodu residents monetary rewards for the submission of plastic wastes, while ensuring a safer, cleaner and healthier environment for all residents.

The initiative tagged the “Go Recycling Hub Project”, spearheaded by Ibile Oil and Gas (IOGC) in partnership with the Sahara Group and embraced by the Ikorodu Local Government, was launched yesterday, 28th June, 2024, the first of its kind in the division.

To effectively engage the initiative, residents are to collect plastic wastes and bring them to the depot, where they are weighed and paid accordingly.

The Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government, Honourable Wasiu Adeshina also highlighted that the strategic synergy is aimed at involving residents in the progressive journey to achieving a cleaner, healthier and safer environment for all, while also empowering, especially in this time of economic hardship.

Adeshina expressed gratitude to IOGC and the Sahara Group, for launching the initiative in the Council, while advising that more depots be established in strategic locations, particularly inner communities, for effectiveness and easy accessibility.

While speaking at the launch today, the representatives of IOGC and the Sahara Group, stressed that the initiative was crucial at this time of Cholera outbreak in ensuring a healthier environment to curb the outbreak.

David Ayinde, representing Sahara Group, praised the waste-to-wealth program for its role in addressing environmental concerns and economic needs across the country.

He urged residents to build a community that transforms waste into wealth, with a view to creating a brighter future for all.

Folashade Adebanjo from Sahara Group commended Adesina for providing land for the recycling hub, while describing Adesina as a blessing to Ikorodu Local Government.

Esther Chibueyin Fagbo from Wecyclers explained the types of waste eligible for recycling in exchange for money, including pure water sachets, plastic bowls, lids, cartons, papers, baskets, tomato tins, chairs, buckets, kegs, bottles, and aluminum cans.

She however explained that the waste would be weighed before being converted to cash.

Abiola Ibine from Ibile Oil & Gas Corporation highlighted the initiative’s 12-year history and its readiness to make a significant impact in Ikorodu.

She praised Adesina’s commitment to the project.

The formal opening of the depot at Ojogbe area of Ikorodu was witnessed by APC Chieftains, Senior Ikorodu Local Government Staffs and other dignitaries.

Surprisingly, operations began almost immediately, with nearby residents trooping to the newly opened depot to submit plastic wastes in exchange for money.
