The dust being generated by yesterday’s inconclusive house of assembly primary election in Ikorodu is yet to settle, as Hon Saheed Ibikunle, a leading aspirant for the Ikorodu Constituency 1 House of Assembly ticket on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress has blamed certain powerful elements in the party for deliberately scheming him out of yesterday’s election.
According to a key member of the Omoluabi group, the academia-turned politician expressed shock and dismay at the sudden release of a purported list of aspirants cleared by the party for the election which surfaced on the social media, on the eve of the election.
According to the list, while six other aspirants for the position were marked CLEARED, Hon Ibikunle’s name was conspicuously marked, NOT CLEARED / ABSENT from the screening exercise. This, we gathered led to the non-recognition of many of the candidate’s agents at many of the voting centres.
Speaking further, the source who said he accompanied Hon Ibikunle to the screening exercise conducted by the party at the state secretariat in Acme wondered how the aspirant’s name could be marked absent in an exercise he fully participated in, thereby screening him out of the primary election.
The impeccable source said he believed that the scheme was the handiwork of some certain elements within the party who are threatened by the popularity of the aspirant and are bent on doing everything possible to frustrate his candidate’s political ambition, in order to pave way for the emergence of their preferred candidate.
A winner is yet to be announced, 24 hours after the exercise took place, due to many irregularities and violence that broke out during the exercise across Ikorodu.
