PERSISTENT BLACKOUT AND EXTORTION: IKORODU AMBASSADORS GROUP PETITIONS IKEJA ELECTRIC ON BEHALF OF RESIDENTS

The Ikorodu Ambassadors Group, a vibrant Ikorodu Division community advocacy group has petitioned the Management of ikeja Electric over what it termed persistent blackout and extortion of Ikorodu reidents by the power distribution company.

Residents of Ikorodu and its environs have been in utmost darkness from Ikeja Electric in the past couple of months. More worrisome is that, in spite of the total black out, the company has been serving outrageous bills on residents for the power they do not enjoy,

The group’s petition which was also published on its official Facebook platform, with over 20 thousand members made three demands namely; provision of 18-20 hours of electricity, desist from serving estimated bills to residents and immediate providisiin of pre-paid meters to electricity consumers on the community, in line with the directive of the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The petition is reproduced below;

PETITION ON PERSISTENT BLACKOUT AND EXTORTION OF CUSTOMERS BY IKEJA ELECTRIC IN IKORODU.

Dear Sir/Ma,

The IKORODU AMBASSADORS GROUP on behalf of the people of Ikorodu Division who are customers of IKEJA Electric (IE) Distribution Company present this petition with reference to the above-mentioned matters.

We have chosen to notify your company and its management of the untold hardships, exploitation and extortion our co-citizens and people in Ikorodu suffers at the hands of IE.

The persistent power outages and extortion have gone for years with no efforts made by the management of Ikeja Electric to correct this anomaly.

We propose as a way forward these resolutions:

(a) Ikeja Electric will henceforth agree to a supply of 18-20 hours of electricity to the wards and communities in Ikorodu Local Government Area/LCDA.

(b) Ikeja Electric will stop henceforth the issuing of estimated charges and bills to customers in Ikorodu Division.

(c) Ikeja Electric will metre buildings in Ikorodu in compliance with the directives of the National Electricity Regulation Commission.

The Ikorodu Ambassadors Group will hereby appreciate your swift response to this complaint/request so as to register peace in the mind of residents in Ikorodu Division and to anticipate a favorable change in power supply to the people of Ikorodu.

Thank you.
Rasheed A. Fatuga
Founder, Ikorodu Ambassadors Group.
