Monday, 21st January, 2019 started like every other day in Lagos but, the unusual and unimaginable show of shame played out at the premises of the Ikorodu West LCDA Secretariat as the five Councillors from various wards in the LCDA placed the entrance to the Chairman’s office under lock and key, with their legislative mace.
To show that they truly mean business, the councilors went further to block the entrance gate tp the council secretariat with their official cars, thereby paralyzing official activities at the council secretariat.
But for the intervention of some unnamed party leaders and Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, the showdown would have degenerated beyond measure.
Speaking with Ikorodu Oga Radio on the reason behind the action of the legislators, a councilors who pleaded anonymity disclosed that their action was a culmination of about two years of non-performance, unremitted deductions and non-payment of the Councillors sitting allowance and other allowances.
‘Can you imagine, since 2017 when we came on board, the Chairman is yet to execute a single project in any of our wards, as agreed with her from inception. She asked that we nominate a project worth’ five hundred thousand naira in all the five wards of the council, which we all did but, for over two years now, she has been giving one excuse after another’.
Asked why they did not approach party leaders to assist them in finding political resolution to the problem, our source revealed that all efforts have proved abortive as most leaders in the Ikorodu West LCDA have mediated between them and the Chairman, without a way out, hence the need for the showdown.
On the excuse of paucity of funds to execute projects, our source described that as laughable, ‘since we came Into office in 2017, none of us have any idea how much comes into the purse of the council, in terms of IGR and how such funds are been spent. That alone is an impeachable offense but, we have decided to show understanding and maturity, all of which she has continued to take for granted’, he said.
According to our impeccable source, the Councillors decided to go on the public showdown in response to an alleged threat by the Chairman to deal with the them for daring to petition the immediate past Commissioner for Local Government, Hon Yetunde Arobieke who reportedly chided the council chair for the ill-treatment being meted to the Councillors.
Consequently, she allegedly vowed to use her connection to the new Commissioner for Local Government to deal with the Councillors and teach them a lesson of their lives.
